I know I am not addressing your main concern, but it was my 
understanding that studs were welded to plates with a special type of 
gun where the stud itself was the welding stick, with a sharpened end, 
and the end result was the same as a full penetration weld. Thus, the 
stud weld was as strong as the stud itself.... I reserve the right to 
be wrong.
