Re: Welding High Strength Bolts

Kipp,

A490 is quenched and tempered steel. Applying heat to Q&T steel is always a bad idea. From experience, after the weld cools, one good whack with a 5# hammer will break the bolt off. Why an A490 bolt? Can't a piece of threaded rod work?

Subject: Welding High Strength Bolts

I reviewing a remedial detail proposed by a contractor that involves
welding an A490 bolt to an A36 plate. Welding a high strength bolt does
not seem like a good idea to me, but I haven't been able to find any
thing in the literature saying yes or no. Can anyone point me to some
information on the do's and don'ts of welding high strength bolts?
