It was stated: "Steel can become brittle over time, especially with some of the older steel manufacturing processes at the turn of the century. Carbon content and impurity content, corrosion and oxidation will degrade steel over significant time, and therefore affect weldability." I would like further insight into the above statement. I understand that steel will corrode and oxidize but it is not clear what mechanism will cause the steel to become brittle after many years of service.
