Do research into glue. You can make the connection with nothing but bolts, but there will be some "slop" due to slightly oversized holes. Specify a glue that can handle the horizontal shear, then specify enough bolts to hold the pieces together. Realize that cutting bolt holes can remove a considerable amount of the section, especially if they are counter-sunk. Things to consider: Type of load: Will the glue experience creep under sustained dead load?
