Just in case, Australia uses a similar designation system.... UB is "universal beam" e.g: depth(mm)*width(mm)*mass(kg/meter) for example: 610x305x149UB the equivalent aussie universal beam is.... 610UB149 and the same convention for universal columns etc.... There is also a book by N.S. Trahair and M.A. Bradford "The Behaviour and Design of Steel Structures" which is useful to compare provisions of AISC LRFD with AS4100 and BS5950....a handy reference..
