------ =_NextPart_000_01BC4EA2.A6D55AC0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Mr. Goldstein submitted a letter to SEAOC State Board indicating his = concern regarding SEAOC's liability with regard to what occurs on the = Internet and what is published in Online. His concern was directed at = the states liability as well as issues that relate to protection of the = not-for-profit status of the organization.=20 In my opinion, Mr. Goldsteins comments where more of a political move = than any real threat. He suggested that the List as well as Online be = placed on "hold" until the liability issue is resolved and until which = time a committee can be formed to review and comment upon what is = published in Online. Please keep in mind that Mr. Goldstein is not an engineer, nor is he a = member of SEAOC - he is simply an employee paid by our dues. In response to his letter to SEAOC, SEAOSC issued their own letter to = SEAOC that informed them that SEAOSC owns and supports the Listservice = as well as full rights to Online. They further pledged (please note that = I am paraphrasing all of this) their continuing support for our efforts = and suggested that if these issues persist, SEAOSC would remove SEAOC's = name from the server and Online - which would revert back to SEAOSC. This has caused concerns with the state CAC (Computer Applications = Committee) which is made up of ten SEA members from around the state. = The ten members represents an editorial staff for Online as well as = offering support for each of the functions of the Server and Online. At this time, the resolution of this matter is being discussed among the = CAC committee - where the issue rightly belongs. Please remember that = these ten members represent the forces that keep the Server and Online = evolving. I have complete faith in our membership to resolve this issue = for in the interest of the professional community and not the politics = that inevitably occurs in similar organizations. The long term ramifications will have little impact upon the community = since our CAC committee is dedicated to the goals that we set for the = professional community. One member indicated his concern should the name = revert back to the Southern Chapter he would have difficulty obtaining = the time needed from his employer to devote to the committee. He is a = key player as is each member of CAC.=20 I would respect his opinion on this matter, however, I have a personal = distaste for politics that occur due to power struggles. I take the = issues personally since I have written nearly 95% of SEAOSC Online for = four years prior to the formation of this Committee. I do this because I = enjoy doing it and because I feel that I have something to offer the = community. I believe that Shafat does the same thing. Each of us have = discussed the future of the Internet and what direction we expect Online = and the List to evolve. Our dreams include the world of engineers - not = just SEA. As far as the server is concerned, we are devoted to evolve = the list and web pages with or without SEA. As far as Online is concerned, the evolution of the journal may reach a = point where it will be continuously generated from input within the = community and I may be able to step out. I would not like this, but = would do it happily once it stops being enjoyable. The fastest way for = this to happen is to continue with political power struggles. Each member of the state board needs to understand the potential of the = Internet and the influence it will have upon the way we work. At this = time I believe that the List is thought of as a meeting place to = socialize. What is not seen by these members is that it is the most = powerful tool to unite structural engineers and to unite other = organizations such as CASE and NSPE as well as all other organizations = that will help increase the lobbying efforts of the community to make = changes in laws and on the floor of ICBO. Soon our committees will be = made up of member from around the world, similar to the way in which an = office network (intranet) works, code drafts can be placed in a network = folder to be retrieved and commented on by each member - regardless of = location.=20 Visual and Audio conferencing will reach a point that members in Zurich = will be able to view and discuss the same issues as members in Southern = California which will help shape the way we work with a uniformity of = design around the world. Speaking for myself, I believe that this is a reality that will become = practical in a very short period of time - less than three to five = years.=20 The benefits to SEAOC will be obvious as membership increases and the = goals that the organization has made will become a reality much sooner = and with more of the "bug" that exist in current codes, worked out that = much sooner. For more information (believe it or not there is) consult the next issue = of Online where our editorial will focus on the advancements to be made = within the professional community utilizing a very powerful platform = known as the Internet. Finally, please leave the issue of Mr. Goldsteins comments to the CAC = committee at this time, inasmuch as they do represent all of our = interests. The following is a list of the Ten members and their = affiliation: Shafat Qazi - SEAOSC Dennis Wish - SEAOSC Bruce Bates - SEAOSC Mark Deardorff - SEAOSD James Lord - SEAONC Stephen Fisher - SEAOCC Gerry Murdock - SEAOCC Humayun Abbas - SEAONC Dennis McCroskey - SEAONC Allen Adams - SEAOSD One more thing, please do not take these comments in such as manner as = to suggest that we do not want your opinions or comments. This = particular issue has already been acted upon and needs to be handled in = the most diplomatic manner at this time so as not to misinterpret the = concerns of each member.=20 Not only to I want ideas and opinions as to the future of the List and = Online, I would tend to demand it of those of you that participate since = we are, essentially, a newly formed committee of over one thousand = members. I would hope that each of you would offer suggestions that = reflect your insights into the future of the profession and how the = Internet can be tailored to your needs. Respectfully, Dennis Wish PE Editor SEAOC Online Journal ------ =_NextPart_000_01BC4EA2.A6D55AC0 Content-Type: application/ms-tnef Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
